FitKids Club Buderim | Kid’s Gymnastics classes on the Sunshine Coast

Gymnastics is a great way for kids, teens and adults to learn new skills, increase fitness & flexibility as well as meet new people in their local community. I wanted something fun and most importantly something that would challenge my kids to build some life-long skills.

FitKids Club Buderim

Fit Kids Buderim has been around for over 30 years and offers gymnastics that is fun for babies (walking) right through to adults. FitKids is run by local Eileen, who is an absolute delight and makes you feel welcome as soon as you walk in the door.

The club is affiliated with the Queensland and Australian Gymnastics Federations and your insurance is covered when you participate in the classes. Importantly the classes have multiple instructors to help guide the children and assist, they are all qualified and and have First Aid qualifications for peace of mind.

The one thing I absolutely love about the classes are that they are casual. There is no need to buy a uniform, sign up for a direct debits, an ongoing commitment, or expensive joining fee’s.

It is so refreshing to be able to arrive when we are available and pay as you go.

Structure of class & skills

*Please note I will be referring the Pre-kids (4-5 year old) classes*

The pre-kids class is a total of one hour and is a lot of fun. There is a mix of planned activities and free play which is nice as it allows the kids who are fixated on certain skills to continue to practice them without feeling pressure to join in on group activities.

Throughout the class there is high energy music playing and honestly the kids do not stop moving until they sit in the car to go home.

The class usually consists of a warm up, focusing on a specific skill set or a skill with an apparatus like a Hula Hoop.

Then there are some planned group activities throughout the class which a lot of the parents are actively involved in.

After that its time to hit the circuit! Each week the FitKids team create a new circuit and the kids work their way around and practice their skills on different pieces of equipment like the balance beam, horizontal bars, ropes, swings, silks & mini trampolines.

At the end there is 10 minutes of free time, where they can practice on anything they want.

There are different classes for different age groups, from children who are just walking, school aged and even adult classes.

Benefits of Kids Gymnastics

Gymnastics offers many benefits for children from toddlers to older kids. Some of the main benefits are;

1. Develop confidence

Trying something new can be overwhelming. With a new environment, people and skills to try it can be particularly daunting.

By going to classes regularly and practicing the same skills over and over they will see improvement which can be so powerful for kids. In particular as they see themselves progress each week they will feel an increased confidence within themselves. The classes are designed for skills but also participation in a group setting which can foster confidence and team work.

2. Improve flexibility, balance & coordination

This is a big topic that I am passionate about and gymnastics is really an all in one. Within the classes there is running, jumping, climbing, balancing, hanging involved in all the classes which promotes a whole host of fantastic benefits.

Why is it important for kids to do these things? There are certain milestones that are important for kids to meet, they are a guidelines but one of the best ways for them to meet there physical milestones is through exercise. Exercise increases muscle strength, increased bone density and coordination. Without consistently doing these things daily kids can sometimes be fall behind

Doing incidental exercise and planned exercise and starting early in life will set kids up for hopefully life-long habits and benefits.

3. Understanding their own body & spatial awareness

Spatial awareness is an important skill and one that is learned through repetition.

My son loves horizontal bars at gymnastics, and every week since we started he has jumped on the mini trampoline and tried to reach the horizontal bar. But it wasn’t always like that, at first he didn’t want to jump he just wanted to be lifted up to hang, slowly he started jumping and trying to reach the bars by himself and many times he fell. Last week he jumped up and caught the high bar and then managed to make his way to the lower bar where he hung upside down from his knees.

By doing this repetitively he was able to understand spatial awareness and where his body was and needed to be in order to execute that sequence of events.

Participation Award

“At Fit-Kids we love to reward the participation of every child! After each Fitkids Class all club members receive an attendance sticker. When they collect 10 stickers on their Fit-Kids attendance cards they are rewarded with a prize of their choice from the prize box.”

My kids love this, they both check that we have the attendance cards before we head off to class, and love collecting their stickers at the end of the session. We haven’t attended 10 sessions yet, but my kids cannot stop talking about it and will be so excited when the day comes.
